(Editor’s note: In English, in using superlative adjectives, implication can often be applied if the interlocutor knows the implication. For example, A father can say “She looks sadder.” And the mother may know that the father means that their daughter looks even sadder than some time earlier. In Tunisian Arabic, using implication doesn’t work conventionally. Using the example above, if a father wants to reference that his daughter looks sadder he would have to state the comparison which may mean stating the period of time that he’s comparing the sadness too or using a general term like “than usual”.)
